BOTTOM BRACKET
BOTTOM BRACKET VOCABULARY
The bottom bracket is the most neglected part of a bike, and one of the most important. While it is not as exciting as a fancy high end rear derailleur, or deep dish wheels, it is definitely of equal importance! A cheap bottom bracket can be inefficient and cause a lot of creaking while riding.
There are many different bottom bracket standards, but our 3D configurator has been coded to only let you buy compatible bottom brackets depending on the crankset you choose.
There are 2 main types of bottom bracket, ceramic and steel. This material name represents the material used in the rotating balls within a steel shell of the bearing. The benefits of a ceramic bearing include: better efficiency, lighter, and longer lifetime. The downsides are: high cost, high maintenance, and high cost ( I know I said it twice). Ceramic bearings are great for people chasing every finite amount of performance, but studies have shown that high end steel bearings are almost as efficient as the best ceramic bearings, but at a lesser cost. The last differentiating charictaristic is if a bottom bracket is press fit or threaded. If a bottom bracket is threaded that means it screws directly into the frame, our gravel and mountain bikes feature this technology. A threaded bottom bracket is great in off road cycling because they do not loosen over time, less dirt gets into the bearing and they are easier to change. A press fit bottom bracket has two varieties, press together, and thread together. A press together is 2 cups that get pushed together, a thread together is 2 cups with threads that thread together. A thread together bottom bracket stays in line better than a press together, and is easier to change. However thread togethers tend to be more expensive. More information can be found here.

PRAXIS BB30 STEEL
The PRAXXIS BB30 STEEL bottom bracket features PRAXIS's high grade Enduro 2437 steel bearings and are fully sealed in the bottom bracket cup. On average this bottom bracket weighs 130g, and is only road crank compatible. This is a press fit bottom bracket, that pushes together.
PRAXIS BB30 CERAMIC
The PRAXIS BB30 CERAMIC bottom bracket features fully sealed ceramic bearings. This bottom bracket will provide better efficiency, but will have to be maintained yearly. This bottom bracket weighs 130g, and is not mountain bike compatible. It is a press fit bottom bracket, that presses together.
WHEELS MFG CERAMIC
The WHEELS MFG CERAMIC bottom bracket features top of the line bearings and it threads together. It weighs 156g and is not compatible with mountain bikes. The thread together nature of this bottom bracket simplifies maintenance, increases life of the bearing, smoother operation, and quick easy bearing replacement.
ONE MORE STANDARD
There is one more bottom bracket option on our website, for certain SRAM chainrings there is the option of SRAM GXP, or SRAM DUB bottom bracket. Long story short, SRAM wanted to release a new bottom bracket standard for all types of bikes, this is currently replacing GXP in their lineup as most new components are DUB spindles instead of GXP. As of right now you can order Force and Red components with GXP spindle, and only GXP can have a ceramic bottom bracket (this will be updated if it ever changes!). Linked below are 2 articles about the standards, and here is a thread comparing the 2.

DUB PRESSFIT30 BOTTOM BRACKET
The SRAM DUB PRESSFIT30 BOTTOM BRACKET is a steel press together bottom bracket that weighs on average 160g. This is a very entry level bottom bracket and is great for people on a budget.
DUB WHEELS MFG ABEC-3
The WHEELS MFG ABEC-3 DUB bottom bracket is a very high quality steel bottom bracket. It is a thread together design, these threads provide easy maintenance, no creaking, smoother operation, and long bearing life. This bottom bracket weighs 151g.
PRAXIS GXP
The PRAXIS GXP bottom bracket is a steel bottom bracket for GXP cranks. It weighs about 149g, and is not for mountain bike usage. This bottom bracket is a press together bracket.
WHEELS MFG CERAMIC GXP
The WHEELS MFG CERAMIC GXP bottom bracket is a thread together bottom bracket with ceramic bearings, and weighs 168g. This bottom bracket is very efficient, smooth, easy to replace, and has a longer bearing life than others.
