BRAKE LEVER DIFFERENCES
BRAKE VOCABULARY
There are 2 types of disk brake systems, hydraulic and mechanical. In a mechanical disk brake system you have a lever that pulls a cable which moves the pads together in the brake to slow you down. A hydraulic system uses a fluid filled line that is similar to you car brake system. When you move the lever it compresses the fluid and moves the pads. Mechanical disk brakes are easier to work on and maintain, but hydraulic systems provide more stopping power.
BRAKE LEVERS
TRP (912)
The TRP 912 is a high-performance time trial brake. This brake lever is a hydraulic disk brake, with aluminum body construction, and a carbon braking lever. It comes with its own brake caliper, and is compatible with both SRAM and SHIMANO systems. This brake uses mineral oil, and weighs 390g per brake system.
PROFILE DESIGN 3/ONE CARBON
The PROFILE DESIGN 3/ONE CARBON BRAKE lever is a mechanical brake lever with a composite body and carbon lever. It is compatible with both SRAM and SHIMANO systems. For 2 levers the weight is 110g, this does not include caliper weight.
SRAM S-900
The SRAM S-900 brake system provides uncompromising braking for uncompromising riders. It features adjustable lever reach, and quad piston calipers. SRAM says "less time slowing down is more time going fast". Weight not provided.
SHIMANO ULTEGRA ST-R8060
The SHIMANO ULTEGRA ST-R8060 is a mechanical brake lever with integrated shifters for SHIMANO's Di2 system. It features all alloy construction, and a set of levers weighs 138g.
SHIMANO DURA ACE R9160
The SHIMANO DURA ACE R9160 is a mechanical disk brake lever and has integrated electronic shifting in the lever. This is only compatible with SHIMANO Di2 systems, features a carbon lever, alloy construction, and a set weighs 127g.
SHIMANO DURA ACE R-9180
The SHIMANO DURA ACE R-9180 hydraulic brake lever integrates SHIMANO's Di2 electronic shifting with the stopping power of hydraulic brakes. This lever weighs 99g and uses mineral oil.
BRAKE CALIPERS
TRP 912 CALIPER
This is the caliper that comes with the TRP 912 brake lever, it is a 2 piston caliper, and uses mineral oil.
JUIN TECH F1
The JUIN TECH F1 brake caliper is a hybrid hydraulic system. It is cable actuated, but the internals are hydraulic components, this results in easy maintenance and improved stopping power.
TRP HY/RD
The TRP HY/RD brake caliper is a hybrid hydraulic brake caliper. This means it connects to a mechanical lever, but the internals of the caliper are hydraulic. this leads to easy maintenance, and improved stopping performance.
TRP SPYRE
The TRP SPYRE brake caliper is a mechanical brake caliper that weighs 146g. It provides easy setup and great stopping power.
SRAM S-900
The SRAM S-900 brake caliper comes with the SRAM S-900 brake lever. This system uses DOT fluid.
SHIMANO DURA ACE BR-R9270
This caliper comes with the DURA ACE R9180 levers. It is a hydraulic caliper that uses mineral oil.
